CIPS Level 2 Certificate in Procurement and Supply Operations

Every successful procurement career starts with a clear understanding of what procurement actually is and why it matters. L2M1 introduces you to the fundamental roles, activities, systems, and processes that define the procurement and supply function in organisations of all types and sizes.  You will explore the core vocabulary of procurement, understand how purchasing decisions affect organisational performance, and learn the Five Rights of procurement the right quality, quantity, time, place, and price that underpin everything a procurement professional does.

You will also examine the stages of the sourcing process, the administration systems that support procurement, and the ethical responsibilities every procurement professional carries from day one.  Studied as part of the CIPS Level 2 Certificate in Procurement and Supply Operations, this is the foundational module that sets the context for everything that follows in your CIPS qualification journey.

Effective procurement is built on a thorough understanding of how organisations operate and how the contracting process works. L2M2 develops your knowledge of business organisation types, the structures within which procurement functions sit, and the contractual frameworks that govern buying and selling activity.  You will learn how to identify and use sources of information on suppliers and customers, how different pricing methods work in practice, and how to recognise the advantages and disadvantages of each approach.

This module gives you the practical knowledge to navigate the contracting process with confidence understanding what makes an agreement binding, what terms and conditions mean, and how the procurement cycle operates from initial need through to payment.  This module is assessed through a computer-based objective response examination and builds directly on the foundation established in L2M1.

Procurement does not happen in isolation it requires effective communication, collaboration, and relationship management with a wide range of people inside and outside the organisation. L2M3 develops your understanding of who stakeholders are in a procurement and supply context, why they matter, and how to work with them professionally and productively.  You will explore how to identify and map stakeholders, understand what motivates different types of people within the procurement process, and develop the communication and interpersonal skills that make procurement professionals effective in their roles.

The module also covers how to handle conflict professionally, recognise anti-competitive behaviours such as cartels, and understand the soft skills that build trust and credibility with the people you work alongside.  As an MCIPS-pathway module, L2M3 establishes the professional relationship management skills that every procurement practitioner needs, regardless of the sector or organisation they work in.

Digital technology is now central to how procurement and supply functions operate. L2M4 introduces you to the key systems and technology tools that support procurement activity from eProcurement and eSourcing platforms to purchase-to-pay (P2P) systems, supplier databases, and quality management frameworks.  You will understand why organisations invest in procurement technology, how different systems support different parts of the procurement process, and what quality management means in a procurement and supply context.

This module gives you a practical understanding of the digital infrastructure that underpins modern procurement and why getting the right systems in place is critical to compliance, efficiency, and value delivery.  Whether you are working in a large organisation with complex ERP systems or a smaller business with simpler tools, the knowledge you develop in L2M4 will help you engage more effectively with the technology around you and contribute to continuous improvement in your procurement function.

Even the best procurement strategy delivers nothing if the right goods do not arrive at the right place at the right time and in the right condition. L2M5 introduces you to the essential principles of inventory management, logistics, and expediting the practical disciplines that keep supply chains running smoothly and organisations stocked and operational.

You will learn how inventory control works, the key methods used to manage stock levels and replenishment, and how warehousing and freight operations support the flow of goods through the supply chain. The module also covers expediting the process of actively tracking and chasing orders to ensure they arrive on schedule and explores how to manage the logistics function in a way that balances cost, efficiency, and environmental impact.  L2M5 gives you a strong operational grounding in the physical movement of goods within supply chains, complementing the commercial and contractual knowledge developed across the rest of the Level 2 Certificate.

No. The CIPS Level 2 Certificate is specifically designed for those who are completely new to procurement and supply. No prior qualifications or experience are required — just a commitment to developing your professional knowledge.

Each module is assessed through a computer-based examination. You can sit your exams at a CIPS-approved exam centre or via remote proctored exam. CIPS offers six exam sittings per year, giving you flexibility around your schedule.

CIPS recommends allowing up to 12 months to complete the Level 2 Certificate. The total qualification time is 180 hours, comprising 120 hours of guided learning, 54 hours of self-study, and 6 hours of examination time.

On completing the Level 2, you can apply for Affiliate Membership of CIPS. This gives you access to CIPS’s resources, professional network, and the ability to progress to the next qualification level.
